Process

|
An
effective design process is as important as good design principles.
Without a framework that channels effort and manages risk, projects can
easily go off track, failing to deliver results worthy of a client's
investment. At Papugai, our work is backed by one of the most
successful and accountable design methodologies in the industry. Our
process enables innovation while keeping sight of the practical design
constraints involved in any clearly-targeted project.
Iterative Design and Pervasive Usability
In order to deliver products that meet the highest standards of value
and usability, our design methodology incorporates systematic processes
to measure performance and drive success. Through a process of
"iterative design," we progressively evaluate and refine each design as
it moves through the successive stages of development. By incorporating
client and user feedback at every stage of our work, we create a
progressively more refined product with higher and higher levels of
value and usability.
Our philosophy of "pervasive usability" means that our focus on
usability concerns is global and ongoing. Moving from research and
analysis—through conceptual design, prototyping, and production
stages—to the final implementation of a project, our process keeps
usability goals in mind at every turn. Our trained staff works to test,
evaluate, and anticipate the performance of a product at every stage,
reducing costs for clients and creating user experiences that are
useful, effective, and empowering.
A Process That Ends in Results
Our project management philosophy is to establish and remain
accountable to explicit success criteria, against which we evaluate the
status of each project throughout its development cycle. Our approach
emphasizes the importance of staged implementation, where the project
scope is well defined and feasible at each stage and a set of
milestones, or benchmarks, ensures that meaningful deliverables are
achieved throughout the project.
Always explicitly adapted to individual project needs and client work
style, our systematic process stresses a clear definition of goals, a
solid understanding of client and customer needs, and ongoing
evaluation. It reduces risk, allows for the successful and timely
completion of goals, and maximizes return on investment.
Here is a very brief overview of our typical process for just one
channel of our company, i.e., website strategy, design, production and
development.
1. Strategy and User Needs Analysis
We identify requirements, formulate the design problem, and develop a
viable strategy to meet business needs in a cost-sensitive manner.
Beginning with a client's existing brand strategy, organizational
information, and desired business outcomes, we work to determine the
target audience and platforms of a project and to create a clear
profile of users, their tasks, and the usability goals of the
end product. Common evaluation methods at this stage include
competitive analysis, exploratory research, functional and
observational analysis, focus groups, user interviews, and surveys.
2. Conceptual Design
We lay out the conceptual design, or initial framework, of a website or
software application. We work to determine functionality, carefully
evaluating product effectiveness and viability before committing to any
specific layout or implementation. Key considerations include the way
users will interact with a particular website or application, the
step-by-step processes they will perform, and the relationship between
individual pages. This stage incorporates user testing and expert
review processes to ensure that our work will achieve desired results
in real-world situations.
3. Mockups and Prototyping
We create visual representations, or mockups, and interactive
scenarios, or prototypes, in order to develop and refine the final
product design. Through a rapid production and review process, we save
time and money by understanding the impact of our work early on,
avoiding expensive changes at a later stage. Common evaluation methods
include focus groups and user testing, as well as evaluative
walkthroughs and testing against standards and guidelines. Through
careful work at this stage, we ensure that a design is ready for
production.
4. Production, Implementation, and Development
We create the finished product—from final text and graphic content to
software development and implementation. Guided by comprehensive
processes of quality assurance and usability evaluation, we develop a
product that delights users and meets or exceeds our established objectives.
5. Deployment and Ongoing Support
We make our product available to the public. In a final pre-launch
quality-testing phase, we ensure that every element of a product is
ready for use. Immediately following deployment, a final correctness
assessment verifies accuracy. We then move into our maintenance and
stewardship roles, providing support to our clients and their
customers. Through field-testing, user feedback, and hit- log analysis,
we provide ongoing optimization of your site in response to actual
usage and evolving customer needs.
